パラオから見える、いま世界で起きていること 🌎
昨晩、『情報7days ニュースキャスター』というテレビ番組でパラオのことが放送されていました。台湾と強い国交があるパラオが、中国から圧力をかけられているという内容でした。
私たちもこの活動をするまで知りませんでしたが、以前から南太平洋諸国を巡っての、中国と米国との覇権争いが存在しているそうです。地政学的にみて、パラオは南太平洋における“重要な拠点”となり得る場所にあるそうで、パラオはこの争いの渦中にある国の一つです。
昨年の１０月の活動時。
久しぶりにペリリュー島に訪れましたが、米軍が急ピッチで基地と滑走路の整備を進めていて、ただならぬ雰囲気を感じました。
以前訪れた“静かで穏やかなペリリュー島”とは違う印象を受けました。
この動きも米中関係がこじれてきているのが理由で、ペリリューの住民の中でも、『かつてのような戦争が起こるのではないか』という不安な声があるそうです。
私たちは平和な日本で暮らしていて、入ってくる情報も限られていますし、情報が入ったとしても身近に感じられないかもしれません。しかしながら、海外に出てその地域の声に耳を傾けると、自分の知らない世界を感じることができます。
世界中の人が安心して生活ができる日は遠いかもしれませんが、世界情勢について考える機会を持つことは大切だと思い投稿させて頂きました。

Last night, a Japanese TV news program reported on Palau, highlighting the growing pressure it faces from China due to its strong diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
Through our activities, we have learned that Palau is located in a geopolitically important area in the South Pacific, where strategic tensions between China and the United States have existed for some time.
During our mission in October last year, we visited Peleliu Island for the first time in many years. We noticed that U.S. military forces were rapidly developing bases and runways, and the atmosphere felt very different from the quiet and peaceful island we remembered.
Because of worsening U.S.–China relations, some local residents now fear that another conflict could occur in the future.
Living in peaceful Japan, it can be difficult to feel these global tensions as something personal. However, by traveling abroad and listening to local voices, we are reminded that there are realities beyond what we usually see.
While a world where everyone can live without fear may still be far away, we believe it is important to take time to think about global affairs and peace.
